March 29, 2013

Let the countdown begin!FOVP Countdown to Gtown Day

On Saturday, April 6, 2013, Historic Germantown and numerous other local organizations team up with the Friends of Vernon Park, to produce Countdown to Germantown Day, a kick-off event to the official 330th Anniversary of the founding of Germantown on October 6, 2013!

The event runs from 1 pm to 5 pm in Vernon Park, and is FREE to the public!

The celebration is organized by Friends of Vernon Park, an advocacy group seeking to keep the park healthy and engaged in the community. Friends of Vernon Park has reached out to local businesses, organizations, schools and artists from all over Germantown to showcase the rich history, exciting present and forward thinking future of Germantown – right inside the Park.   The countdown festivities will take place in Vernon Park, in conjunction with The Germantown Artist Roundtable, G-Town Restoration CDC, Acclaim Academy, The Germantown Life Enrichment Center, Center in the Park, Flying Kite Media, and Historic Germantown.

The event will feature activities and facts from each Historic Germantown site, performances by local musical, vocal and literary talents, interactive art making by local artists, the dedication of a Peace Pole to Sonia Sanchez, a community quilting activity, a variety of children’s activities and even a community wide line dance of Beyonce’s “Move Your Body” in honor of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign.

These efforts are supported by partnerships with local elected officials Cindy Bass, Councilwoman for the Eighth Council District, and Stephen Kinsey, State Representative for the 201st Legislative District as well as by the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation, and grants from the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Germantown Branch of Citibank.
