Awbury Launches Pivotal New Education Center and Fund

March 8, 2013

Awbury has an extraordinary opportunity to greatly expand and enhance its educational programs, giving them dedicated space, resources, and staff-power. For the past 10 months, they have been busy completing plans to create a new Education Center at the Agricultural Village on the Arboretum’s Northwest Tract. They are thrilled to announce that the installation of the new building began in early February and they expect to have two classrooms as well as an outdoor teaching kitchen just in time for our all-new Summer Adventures camps.

The Education Center is made possible by the generosity of friends and neighbors. Last year, Green Tree School donated a modular building to Awbury upon their move to the former Ivy Leaf School site. Recently, a long-time supporter of the Arboretum stepped in with a gift of $80,000 to transport and install the new structure!!

In addition to the new classrooms, the Evans family has made a significant offer to help us launch a new Education Fund. The Development Committee and Arboretum staff are preparing plans for how we can achieve the maximum benefit from the Evans family offer.
Even without the new education building and Education Fund being in place, enrollment in classes and camps has grown rapidly in the past year, thanks to 2012’s Field Studies for Children and Hearth and Horticulture, a series of adult and family workshops and events. Director of Education Heather Zimmerman is responsible for these successful innovations. With this new boon to our resources, she is confident we will see an amazing array of new educational programs and activities.
Thanks to Awbury Arboretum for sharing this blog entry with us.
