Germantown, do you know Dinah?
Dinah was an enslaved servant of William and Hannah Logan of Stenton. Around 1776 she asked for her freedom and it was granted to her. Faithful as she was, Dinah remained a hired servant of the household. During the occupation of Philadelphia, Dinah had been left to mind the estate when she spotted two British soldiers scheming to burn the mansion. As the soldiers were in the barn gathering straw, Dinah saw an officer riding along the main street in search of deserters. She caught the officers attention and told him that she had seen two men who appeared to be deserting enter the barn. Despite protest, the soldiers were quickly apprehended and their plans of arson foiled. To this day we are grateful for the heroic actions of Dinah. http://ow.ly/i/1xLGn http://ow.ly/i/1xLGW
