Revolutionary Germantown Festival

October 3, 2012

With only 3 days to to go until Battle, the sites are busy finalizing details and preparing for another memorable festival.  Every year on the first Saturday in October, we gather on the grounds of the summer home of the Chew family for the annual Revolutionary Germantown Festival. Despite the facts, the excitement of the day and the live-action history that unfolds in front of us is enough to spark hope.   Will this be the year that Washington and his troops come out victorious?  Will Philadelphia be liberated from the tyranny of British rule in 2012?

This year there is an exciting line-up of entertainers, activities, and famous guests.  The festival will have a performance by Give and Take Jugglers, and different children’s activities with the sites of Historic Germantown.  There will be special appearances by General George Washington and Revolutionary War hero Ned Hector.  The highlight of the festival, The Battle of Germantown, will be re-enacted at 12pm and 3pm.  Many of the sites will be open for tours and you will not want to miss the bell ringing ceremony at The Concord School house!

The Revolutionary Germantown Festival is a free event brought to you by Historic Germantown and Cliveden of the National Trust.  There will be food trucks and vendors selling items so come out, grab a bite to eat and prepare to re-live one of the most memorable battles of the Revolutionary war.  You can even get an autograph between re-enactments with football great, Tra Thomas from 1pm-3pm or grab a beer from Iron Hill Brewery on the grounds of Upsala!  The Festival is a great time to celebrate our community and appreciate the setting that surrounds us.  The history speaks for itself, but its the people and the atmosphere of the festival that keeps this history alive and well in 2012.

After a day of battling we will travel to Grumblethorpe to celebrate Oktoberfest and thankfully not to Valley Forge on foot to camp out for the winter!  Grumblethorpe hosts their annual Oktoberfest celebration with great company, music, and house tours from 4:30-7:30.  After a tense day of battling come out to 5267 Germantown Avenue to relax and unwind with delicious German food & cold beer! PROST!

It is going to be a great Saturday in Germantown, so invite your friends, share on Facebook and prepare to enjoy yourself at the annual Revolutionary Germantown Festival.
