“Do you recognize this old place…?”

July 13, 2012

Postcard of Cliveden, 1900

“Do you recognize this old place, or is it too long since you were in Phila.?”

So writes an anonymous father to his daughter, Miss Marie Hoffendahl, in the postcard pictured above.  The postcard, which was mailed in August 1902 to Vevey, Switzerland, features a color image of Cliveden (6401 Germantown Avenue) in 1900.

Cliveden was built as a summer home in the 1760s and proceeded to faithfully serve seven generations of the Chew family. The house itself still bears souvenirs from the Battle of Germantown, a Revolutionary War battle that took place at Cliveden in October 1777.

Cliveden, still well-preserved today

Whether it’s your first visit or one of many, we invite you to venture over to this “old place” and other such sites in the Germantown neighborhood . Feel free to stop by any week, but for your convenience keep in mind that all fifteen sites will be simultaneously open tomorrow, July 14, from 12 PM – 4 PM.
