Land of the Free, Home of the Brave

July 3, 2012

This week, we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, immortalized as one of the most important moments in U.S. history. The nation has come so far since that first bold declaration, with 236 more years of history now under its belt.

Pictured here are two mementos of this illustrious history, both of which are part of the collections at the Germantown Historical Society. To the right is a Revolutionary-era flag, dated pre-1791, that features thirteen stars. Below is a 48-star flag, dated post-1912, that was used as a parade flag during World War I by the Germantown and Chestnut Hill Battalion of the Philadelphia Home Defense Rescue.

Can you name all thirty-five states that were added from 1791 to 1912? The first person to e-mail us at info@freedomsbackyard.com with a list of the correct answers will win a free “I ♥ Germantown” bumper magnet!

We hope to see you tomorrow at our July 4th celebration, sponsored by Citibank!
