September 28, 2011

Described as ‘an elegantly told, superbly accomplished history of good and bad intentions gone awry,’ Hagen tells the story of the kidnapping of 4-year-old Charley Ross from the front lawn of his Germantown home. This tale of the first for-ransom kidnapping in American history illustrates the darker side of life in the 1870s  and how this tragic event effected Philadelphia and the nation.

In addition to the author talk and book signing, the Germantown Historical Society will have on view an exclusive exhibition of original newspaper clippings and photographs pertaining to the kidnapping.

The event is free and open to the public and copies of the book with be available for purchase. The Germantown Historical Society is located at 5501 Germantown Avenue. For more information call 215.844.1683 or visit their website.
